What is Art Therapy?

Creative Arts Therapy is an “experiential psychotherapeutic approach utilising many creative modalities within a therapeutic relationship with a trained therapist” and is a holistic therapy, encompassing emotional, cognitive, physical as well as spiritual well-being (ANZACATA).

Art Therapy utilises visual art modalities to assist clients to explore and express their feelings, thoughts and unconscious material that may be difficult to articulate with words. New ideas can be discovered, painful memories or trauma can be explored and expressed in a safer way, blockages or decisions can be worked through in creative ways and new behaviours can be ‘tried on’ to see if they fit. This can be a great deal more effective than simply talking about difficulties and/or change.

The creative process involved in expressing yourself through art-making can bring relaxation, enlightenment, inspiration, boost confidence and improve well-being, and can also help with resolving issues, coping better with symptoms, healthy behaviour management and emotional regulation, reducing stress, anxiety, grief, anger or confusion, improving self-esteem and self-awareness, and encourages self-empowerment.
